On May 6, 2018, for our series Voices on Art, Art This Week Productions filmed this talk by Shailka Mishra, assistant curator, Mehrangarh Museum, Jodhpur, titled Beyond the Surface: Art and Artists at the Jodhpur Court at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This talk is the fourth of five talks we are filming in collaboration with the MFAH as part of the annual Ruth K. Shartle lecture series and in conjunction with the exhibition, Peacock in the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India on view at the museum through August 19, 2018.
From the MFAH website–“The exhibition Peacock in the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India revolves around the connoisseur-kings of Marwar-Jodhpur. These rulers not only protected their kingdom but also pursued remarkable forms of art and culture.
Beginning in the early 1600s, maharajas patronized a flourishing painting workshop. This talk delves into the lives of artists at the heart of these spectacular works of art and explores the central role of the atelier in court culture. Through evocative imagery, a vivid palette, and intricate details heightened with gold and silver, paintings made for the rulers of the Rathore dynasty held a transcendent power. Discover how these works of art were valued for their aesthetic sensibilities as well as for their role as tools of politics and diplomacy.”
Thanks to Shailka and the MFAH for allowing us to film the talk.
