On March 1, 2020, for our series Voices on Art, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Art This Week Productions filmed this talk Mitchell A. Codding, executive director and president, Hispanic Society Museum & Library, New York. This talk was filmed in conjunction with the exhibition, Glory of Spain: Treasures from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, on view at the museum through May 25, 2020.
The Hispanic Society Museum & Library’s collections of art, books, and manuscripts are unparalleled in scope and quality, addressing nearly every aspect of culture in Spain, Latin America, and Portugal. The exhibition Glory of Spain: Treasures from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library brings some 200 of these works to Houston.
This talk shows how the vision of one man, Hispanic Society founder Archer M. Huntington, became a phenomenal resource for promoting the art and culture of the Hispanic world. No other institution, even in Spain, offers such a complete look at Hispanic history, art, and culture. The Hispanic Society houses more than 18,000 works of art that span the Paleolithic Age to the 20th century, and a research library with some 250,000 manuscripts and 35,000 rare books, including 250 printed before 1501.
Thanks to Mitchell for allowing us to film the talk. Thanks also to the MFAH staff, especially Trey Ferguson, for their help recording this talk.
