Voices on Art-Museum of Fine Arts, Houston-Opening Lecture “Francis Bacon: Being and Nothingness”

On February 23, 2020, for our series Voices on Art, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Art This Week Productions filmed this talk by Alison de Lima Greene, the Isabel Brown Wilson Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. This talk was filmed in conjunction with the exhibition, Francis Bacon: Late Paintings, on view at the museum through May 25, 2020.

Born in 1909, Francis Bacon came of age in the maelstrom of two world wars. His paintings reflect the existential crisis faced by many of his generation, and more than any artist of his time, he found in the human form a vessel for beauty and tragedy.

On the opening day of Francis Bacon: Late Paintings, this look at the exhibition introduces Bacon’s work through a historical lens and dives into the key themes that dominate his late paintings.

Thanks to Alison for allowing us to film the talk. Thanks also to the MFAH staff, especially Trey Ferguson, for their help recording this talk.
