Voices on Art-Museum of Fine Arts, Houston-Marjorie Shelley-Transformed by Light: Inspirations, Materials, and Techniques of Van Gogh’s Drawings

On June 20, 2019, for our series Voices on Art, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Art This Week Productions filmed this talk by Marjorie Shelley, the Sherman Fairchild Conservator in Charge of Paper Conservation, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, titled “Transformed by Light: Inspirations, Materials, and Techniques of Van Gogh’s Drawings”.

This talk was filmed in conjunction with the exhibition Vincent van Gogh: His Life in Art, on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, March 10-June 27, 2019.

From the MFAH website–“Drawing was integral to the artistic practices of Vincent van Gogh, from his novice days in Holland to his final days in the south of France. Generally overshadowed by the fame and familiarity of his paintings, Van Gogh’s more than 1,200 drawings (not including the letter sketches) remain comparatively unknown, even though they are among his most ingenious and striking creations.

This illustrated presentation looks at how Van Gogh’s methods, range of media and paper, ideas about color, and strong opinions regarding his graphic work were fundamental to his changing goals and style.”

Thanks to Marjorie for allowing us to film the talk. Thanks also to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, especially Trey Ferguson, for their help in recording this talk.

  1. I understand last week you posted a 45-minute presentation about Ima Hogg by David B. Warren.
I don’t see that listed this week. Is there some way I can retrieve that file or can you send me a copy, URL, or other citation so I can read it.
Thanks for your help and this great service!
    Bob
