Voices on Art-Blanton Museum of Art-Perspectives: Maria Hinojosa and Vincent Valdez

On July 17, 2018, for our series Voices on Art, Art This Week Productions filmed this conversation between journalist Maria Hinojosa and artist Vincent Valdez at the Blanton Museum of Art. They discuss Vincent’s work The City I (on view at the museum through October 28, 2018), in addition to his previous series, The Strangest Fruit and America’s Finest. Introduction by Blanton Director Simone Wicha, with Q&A moderated by Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Veronica Roberts.

ABOUT VINCENT VALDEZ
Valdez is a Mexican-American artist who was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1977 and currently lives and works in Houston. He received a full scholarship to The Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned his BFA in 2000. He is the recipient of The Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for Painters and Sculptors (2016), as well as residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting (2005), The Vermont Studio Center (2011) and the Kunstlerhaus Bethania Berlin Residency (2014).

Valdez’s work is included in numerous museum collections and has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Blanton Museum of Art; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame; Parsons School of Design Museum, Paris; Fundación OSDE, Buenos Aires; among others. His work will also be featured in the exhibition Suffering From Realness at MASS MoCA in spring 2019.

For 25 years, Maria Hinojosa has helped tell America’s untold stories and brought to light unsung heroes in America and abroad. In April 2010, Hinojosa launched The Futuro Media Group with the mission to produce multi-platform, community-based journalism that gives critical voice to the voiceless by harnessing the power of independent media to tell stories that are overlooked or under reported by traditional media.

As the anchor and executive producer of the long-running weekly NPR show Latino USA, and as anchor of the Emmy Award-winning talk show Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One from WGBH/La Plaza, Hinojosa has informed millions of Americans about the fastest growing group in our country. Previously, a Senior Correspondent for NOW on PBS, and currently, a rotating anchor for Need to Know, Hinojosa has reported hundreds of important stories—from the immigrant work camps in NOLA after Katrina, to teen girl victims of sexual harassment on the job, to Emmy Award-winning stories of the poor in Alabama.”
