Voices on Art-Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Lecture “Michelangelo and the Vatican: Masterworks from the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, Naples”

On March 9, 2018, for our series Voices on Art, Art This Week Productions filmed this lecture by David Bomford, the Audrey Jones Beck Curator of European Art, Chairman of Conservation, and organizing co-curator of the exhibition Michelangelo and the Vatican: Masterworks from the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, Naples at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

“Largely drawn from the renowned collection of the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, Italy, Michelangelo and the Vatican presents 40 works commissioned or completed in the 16th century, many during the papacy of Pope Paul III. Remembered for his enthusiastic patronage of the arts in general, and Michelangelo in particular, Pope Paul III oversaw the completion of the artist’s stupendous fresco The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel.

The exhibition features a unique, large-scale copy of The Last Judgment painted in oil by Marcello Venusti. Additional highlights include two of Michelangelo’s finest monumental drawings: Venus Kissed by Cupid and Roman Soldiers; as well as two iconic portraits of Pope Paul III by Italy’s great Renaissance masters: Raphael and Titian.

David Bomford introduces the exhibition, showing how the selections highlight Michelangelo’s greatest artistic triumphs and the close relationship between Michelangelo and Pope Paul III.”-From the MFAH website
