On October 25, 2018, for our series Voices on Art, Art This Week Productions, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, recorded this talk by David B. Warren, founding director emeritus, Bayou Bend, “Ima Hogg: The Extraordinary Cultural Patron behind the Unusual Name”. He discusses the life of Ima Hogg.
From the MFAH website–“The daughter of a Texas governor, Ima Hogg overcame her unusual name and the loss of her parents at a relatively young age to emerge as an independent woman of means. Hogg (1882–1975) devoted her talents and considerable family fortune toward nurturing the arts in Texas and preserving its cultural heritage.
In 1913, she founded the Houston Symphony. Later, she donated her home to the MFAH, and Bayou Bend—filled with her collection of American furniture and decorative arts—opened as a house museum in 1966. After the death of her brother Will in 1930, she and her brother Mike established the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at the University of Texas. These and other efforts were part of her mission to leave Texas a better place.
In this talk based on his book Ima Hogg: The Extraordinary Cultural Patron behind the Unusual Name, David B. Warren celebrates Hogg’s legacy using details drawn from her diaries, letters, and papers, as well as his own firsthand accounts from working closely with her.”
This lecture (three of three) is part of the Tales of Houston Women collaboration, a two-month retrospective and celebration by several of our community’s organizations displaying the many ways Houston’s women have, are, and will put their mark on history. We are celebrating through art, lectures, science, movies, dance, and more. Learn more at www.talesofhoustonwomen.org.
Thanks to David B. Warren, and the MFAH for allowing us to film the talk. Thanks also to MFAH staff, especially Trey Ferguson, for their help in recording this talk.
