In this episode, we visit The Modern and speak with current FOCUS artist, Gary Simmons, about several of his works in the exhibition. First, the installation, Subtlety of a Train Wreck (1998), is indicative of the techniques and materials he continues to work with to this day, notably smeared chalk. First installed in 1988 at Margo Leavin Gallery, Gary tells us about the origins and motivations for the work. In addition, he speaks about, Starlite Theater (2010). It consists of an image of the entrance to the former Dallas Drive-In, The Starlite Theater, one of the few theaters in Texas to permit black patrons in the 1950s.
